SIX STEPS TO GETTING STARTED

A designer meets with you in your home to discuss the scope of your project, possible design solutions and a realistic budget. We discuss your feelings and frustrations, your favorite spaces, and rooms that bring you the most joy. We present a Conceptual Design Contract to begin the design process.

After the design contract is signed we schedule a day to take measurements and photos of your home, and document the existing conditions. This includes certain key furniture if it will be used in the new space. We then create a blueprint of the Existing Conditions.

Eric Rothman, architectural director and co-owner of HammerSmith, listens to your ideas and works with you throughout. He explores all aspects of your home and the way you live, and presents various design solutions within your budget parameters. The ideas are then synthesized into one unified Conceptual Plan.

When you are ready to proceed, a Design Development and Intent To Build Contract is signed. This phase develops the conceptual plan three-dimensionally, including important details, finishes, fixtures, and lighting. A project manager is assigned to your project, and in-house craftsmen and associate tradesmen begin on-site inspections.

HammerSmith develops the Working Drawings, Scope of Work, and Specifications for your approval. The necessary permits, variances, engineering reports, certificates of appropriateness, and other possible legal requirements are handled in this phase. A detailed construction schedule and final pricing are prepared.

The Renovation Contract is then presented for your approval. Because we reserve a project manager for your project during the design process, construction usually begins within two weeks of contract signing. Eric Rothman is on-site regularly throughout construction to inspect design execution and assure a smooth progression from blueprint to build-out.
